This year the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its artistic activities and dedicates the jubilee season to Russian classics. One of the programs, “Pushkin in music”, is timed to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, which falls on May 24. The NPR’s associated artistic director, winner of international competitions Arsenty Tkachenko, will conduct the concert.

Alexander Pushkin is the greatest Russian poet regarded as a genius even in his lifetime. Composer Alexander Serov wrote about him: 'Pushkin is an inexhaustible wellspring for Russian music”. Pyotr Tchaikovsky was also excited by Pushkin's immense talent: “Irrespective of what he narrates in a verse form, in the verse itself, in its syllabic continuity there is something which goes deep into one's soul. This something is music itself.” The poems, dramas and novels, folklore-like fairy-tales and lyrical verses by the great poet have inspired over 1000 composers. About 500 works have been used for over 3000 music opuses, becoming part of the national Russian culture.

Arsenty Tkachenko have chosen some of the brightest works of the music “Pushkiniane” from Glinka to Sviridov: pieces by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and some others for the concert of the NPR.
