September 25 marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich. On this date, a new album by Vladimir Spivakov will be released across all major streaming platforms, completing a trilogy of recordings devoted to the music of the great Russian composer in celebration of his anniversary year.
The new release follows the Suite for Variety Orchestra, issued a year ago, and the song cycle From Jewish Folk Poetry, released in January 2026. The album brings together Spivakov’s interpretations of the Violin Concerto No. 1, with Spivakov appearing as soloist, and the Symphony No. 9, which he conducts.
Spivakov recorded the Violin Concerto No. 1 in 2002 with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne under the direction of James Conlon at the Kölner Philharmonie. The Ninth Symphony was recorded in 2024 at the Moscow Performing Arts Center, with renowned Russian sound engineer Pavel Lavrenenkov.
