A major joint project by Vadim Eilenkrig and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, Symphonic Kind of Blue is a unique program in which legendary jazz masterpieces take on symphonic form. The program premiered in October 2019 at the Svetlanov Hall of the Moscow International Performing Arts Center as part of the “Vladimir Spivakov Invites…” festival. Its upcoming performance on October 17 at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of the great jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.

The best-selling jazz album in the history of recorded music; a work that opened the door to a new musical era; the “Bible” of every jazz musician — all these descriptions apply to Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue. Every musician who took part in the recording, completed in just two studio days in the spring of 1959, went on to become a legend of world jazz, and many saw their careers take off after the album’s release. The jazz community immediately recognized the record as an outstanding achievement.

Sixty years later, Vadim Eilenkrig decided to pay musical tribute to his great predecessor by presenting the music of Kind of Blue in a symphonic setting. Vladimir Spivakov enthusiastically supported the idea, and the baton was subsequently passed to Arsenty Tkachenko, Deputy Artistic Director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia.

Joining Vadim Eilenkrig and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, conducted by Arsenty Tkachenko, for the upcoming concert will be saxophonists Konstantin Safyanov and Dmitry Mospan, pianist Dmitry Ilugdin, guitarist Alexander Rodovsky, bassist Armen Mkrtchyan, and drummer Vitaly Epov.
